Rogge Likely To Run Unopposed For Second Term As IOC President

Rogge, With Encouragement Of Colleagues,
Seeking Re-Election As IOC President
IOC Media Relations Manager Emmanuelle Moreau said that IOC President Jacques Rogge has "sent a letter to all members saying he would run for a second term during" next October's IOC Session in Copenhagen, Denmark, according to Karolos Grohmann of REUTERS. No other IOC member "has announced their intention to run for the position of president and Rogge is likely to win unopposed." IOC VP Lambis Nikolaou: "This is the right decision because eight years is too short and 12 years is enough time for him to complete his work." Grohmann noted Rogge's second term, should he win, "will only be for four years following changes to the duration of the president's term since" the time of former IOC President Juan Antonio Samaranch (REUTERS, 10/24). Rogge, in the letter announcing his intentions of running for a second term, said that he "was encouraged to run for re-election as president by many colleagues." Rogge said the IOC is "now stronger and more united than ever for the greater good of sports development and the Olympic ideals." Rogge noted that the IOC "has reinforced its zero tolerance policy towards doping and pursued 'a good governance policy' in the running of its administration and auditing." AROUND THE RINGS' Mark Bisson reported IOC members "are welcoming Rogge's decision." IOC VP Thomas Bach said that Rogge "should have no opposition and the full support of the membership at the Copenhagen Session." Rogge "has been travelling the globe since the end of the Beijing Olympics in August." He attended the Paralympics in Beijing last month and this month attended the Pan American Sports Organization assembly in Acapulco, Mexico, the Commonwealth Youth Games in India and the Asian Beach Games and Olympic Council of Asia assembly in Bali, Indonesia (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 10/24).

FINAL HURDLES: AROUND THE RINGS' Ed Hula wrote though Rogge "surprised nobody" with his decision, "less certain is what happens with the Olympic Movement through the last five years he'll be in office." Rogge has "led the push for rules changes and a more structured review aimed at a more dynamic Olympic sports program," while "a messy international torch relay with Beijing could lead to domestic-only relays in the future." Rogge on drugs and ethics "has been unwavering." But "uncharted waters are still ahead for Rogge," and the impact a global recession "might have on the finances of the IOC and Olympic Games in Vancouver, London and Sochi is the most immediate." Rogge, a "leading advocate of the Youth Olympic Games," also must "make sure the first edition in Singapore in 2010 is a success." The IOC Presidential election "is likely to be one of the least suspenseful moments of the Copenhagen IOC Session," but "while removing the mystery from his intentions, Rogge has managed to launch a new one for members and IOC watchers to solve for the next five years: who will be his successor?" (AROUNDTHERINGS.com, 10/24).
