Mariners Name Jack Zduriencik As Club's Eighth General Manager

Zduriencik Beats Seven Other Candidates
To Become Mariners' Eighth GM
The Mariners yesterday named Brewers VP & Special Assistant to the GM Jack Zduriencik as the eighth GM in the franchise's history, according to Stone & Baker of the SEATTLE TIMES. Zduriencik "was the last of eight candidates interviewed in the first round, and beat out finalists" including Dodgers Assistant GM Kim Ng, D'Backs Dir of Player Personnel Jerry DiPoto and Blue Jays Assistant GM Tony LaCava. The Mariners "needed special permission" from MLB Commissioner Bud Selig to announce the hire, "as well as to hold his introductory news conference Friday during a World Series off-day." Stone & Baker note following the '07 season, Zduriencik was named Baseball America's Exec of the Year, the "first non-GM so honored." Meanwhile, Ng, who would have been the first female GM in MLB history, "believes she got a legitimate look from the Mariners." Ng: "Making it to the second round was great for me. I'd like to think [Mariners President Chuck Armstrong and Chair & CEO Howard Lincoln] saw something they like as well" (SEATTLE TIMES, 10/23).

STAMP OF APPROVAL: In Seattle, Jerry Brewer writes, "For the first time in years, the Mariners appear to be headed in an obvious direction." There are still questions about Zduriencik's "ability to evaluate established, major-league talent, but he's learned under one of the best in [Brewers GM] Doug Melvin, and with 25 years of experience, he should have concrete ideas on how to run a team" (SEATTLE TIMES, 10/23). Also in Seattle, John Hickey writes, "Even if the Mariners' top brass decides to go with Zduriencik's plan to contend next year ... it's clear the draft and the buildup of the minor league system will be a top priority" (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 10/23).
