Bruins Play Home Opener Same Night As Patriots Host "MNF"

Bruins Draw Large Crowd For Monday's Home
Opener Despite Patriots Hosting "MNF" Game
Bruins Owner Jeremy Jacobs "fashioned a positive spin on his club playing its first home game on a Monday night, an evening that also had the wildly popular Patriots playing host to" the Broncos on ESPN's "MNF," according to Kevin Paul Dupont of the BOSTON GLOBE. Dupont writes did the NHL "willingly and knowingly want the Bruins to open their home schedule the same night the Patriots were playing ... in Foxborough? Not a chance. The Bruins blew it, with an assist to NHL HQ." When asked if he "might have considered requesting a do-over from the schedule-maker," Jacobs said, "I can't second-guess them. I wish I could, but ..." Dupont notes Jacobs "then openly pondered what commissioner Gary Bettman would think if [Jacobs] were quoted as second-guessing Bettman." Jacobs said, "It would be good entertainment." Dupont notes there was "decent business for a Monday night" at the Bruins game, as the team "announced a sellout of 17,565" at the TD Banknorth Garden (BOSTON GLOBE, 10/21). Jacobs said of the conflict in scheduling, "It's not something where they say, 'Let's put the Bruins against the Patriots.' They try and put together the best schedule they can" (BOSTON HERALD, 10/21). More Jacobs: "We all have to accept a certain number of Mondays. If I have to accept a Monday, I'd just as soon use it on opening day. Opening day can drive the crowd; otherwise Mondays and Tuesday are very tough to sell, especially in Boston." In Massachusetts, Bob Stern notes the "normal media that cover the Bruins were on hand at the TD Banknorth Garden, but nothing out of the ordinary. Certainly more should be warranted for a home opener." Stern writes of the scheduling of the game, "Perhaps it's a sign of how far the Bruins have fallen in the psyche of the city. Maybe it's the low esteem hockey is held around the country. Or maybe it's just because you have bozos running the NHL" (BROCKTON ENTERPRISE, 10/21).

EXPANDING THEIR REACH: In Boston, Stephen Harris reports Jacobs "confirmed that the Bruins were invited by the league to open next season in Europe and accepted." But Jacobs had "no details." Jacobs: "As far as I know, they felt it was a good experience (this year) and they're planning to do it again. We'll probably know by the first of the year." Jacobs also "talked about how the performance of the team, not marketing, will determine how the Bruins perform as a business." Jacobs said, "It's so hard to sell something in this city if you're not winning, because there's just so many winning environments that (fans) can go to" (BOSTON HERALD, 10/21).
