Role Reversal: Tiger Serves As Caddie For Buick Contest Winner

Woods Caddies For Winner Of
Buick's "Tee Off With Tiger" Contest
Golfer Tiger Woods yesterday served as a caddie for nine holes at the Torrey Pines South Course for New Jersey resident John Abel, who won Buick's "Tee Off with Tiger" contest, according to Tod Leonard of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. Woods drove Abel around the course in a "tricked-out custom Buick cart," and Abel was "treated as if he were starring in a movie." Abel "had a make up call [Sunday] morning and his entire wardrobe was chosen by Nike," and he "arrived on the 10th tee to the commotion of a couple of dozen members of a Buick film crew." No spectators were allowed on the course. Abel did not meet Woods until he "rolled up to the 10th tee in a cart, cameras rolling, and said, in his acting persona, 'Hey, I hear you're looking for a caddie!'" Abel entered the contest in March hoping to win the "consolation prize of a new car" for his wife. But Abel said of winning the promo, "You get to play golf with the No. 1 man in the world. You can always buy a car" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/21). The AP's Bernie Wilson reported Abel played with a "new set of Nike clubs." The AP and Union-Tribune were the only press outlets allowed on the course, and they were only allowed "to watch on the 10th and 18th holes" (AP, 10/20). Woods: “We just had a great time, conversating and just enjoying each other’s company” ("Golf Central," Golf Channel, 10/20).
