Fan Buys Two Jets PSLs For $65,100 During Online Auction

The first day of the Jets' auction of 2,028 PSLs at the new Meadowlands Stadium, which began yesterday and runs until next Monday, "yielded the highest winning bid, $65,100, for two front-row seats in a five-section, field-level area called the Coaches Club," according to Richard Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES. The "elite seating is behind the Jets' bench and carries amenities like club membership, free parking and access to a patio just behind the team." The auction site, which is operated by StubHub, indicated that some of the PSLs "received at least 30, sometimes more than 50, bids." Along with the two PSLs that sold for $65,100, there were others that "sold for $61,100, $42,200, $40,500, $38,800, $38,500 and $37,500." Along with the PSL fee, fans "must pay $700 a ticket starting in 2010, when the stadium opens." The Jets "have not said how much they expected the licenses to sell for" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/20). On Long Island, Neil Best notes, "Most of the later bids were not as aggressive as earlier ones, with most falling in the $20,000 to $30,000 range" (NEWSDAY, 10/20). CNBC.com’s Darren Rovell reports the “first 35 lots, which each had in between two and five seats in it, averaged just under $28,000 per PSL.” The first lots closed at around 7:30pm ET Sunday, and the next lot closed today at 10:30am. The Jets are going to “wonder, as the auctions continue, how far down the average will drop.” The cheapest PSLs so far sold at 10:30pm for $14,500 per license (CNBC.com, 10/20).
ANONYMOUS BIDDER: In N.Y., Otis & Calder reported the global financial crisis "didn't deter a Manhattan mortgage mogul from shelling out $400,000 for the most expensive football tickets on earth." A source said that the person "ponied up a record $200,000 [each] for two [PSLs]." The anonymous exec "outbid everyone during an 'auction preview party' at The Four Seasons Thursday night hosted" by Jets Owner Woody Johnson. Most experts "had predicted the top PSLs would command no more than $70,000" (N.Y. POST, 10/19).
