Phlying Off The Shelves: Phillies Fans Grab World Series Apparel

Phillies NL Title Merch Selling Rapidly At Many
Philadelphia-Area Sporting Goods Stores
More than 100 fans "swarmed in" Thursday morning to Citizens Bank Park's Majestic Clubhouse store from 8:00-8:30am ET to buy Phillies World Series merchandise, according to Sam Wood of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. The store sold commemorative hats and T-shirts for $35 each, a price which had some fans "grumbling about scouting for knockoffs or heading to discount stores." Store manager Francis Winkey: "The stuff's just flying out of here." Modell's Sporting Goods stores were selling shirts for $24.99 and hats for $21 (PHILLY.com, 10/16). In Philadelphia, Williams & Nark report lines at a Philadelphia-area Modell's Sporting Goods "stretched to the back of the showroom ... ensuring a busy day of moving Phillies merchandise." Store manager Joyce McAllister: "The response from customers has been terrific, phenomenal." McAllister and Charles Murphy, who manages a different Philadelphia-area Modell's location, added that a shirt "bearing the words 'National League Championship' was the hottest seller." Frank DiTillio, who owns a Sports Outlet location in Glendora, New Jersey, said, "We've sold hundreds of them" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 10/17). Some sporting goods stores opened as early as 6:00am Thursday (Allentown MORNING CALL, 10/17). In Pennsylvania, John Roman notes an employee at a Modell's location in Clifton Heights went outside around 6:30pm "with a hand counter and notified the crowd there was a limit of two hats per person." Store GM Tom DeAngelis: "It's been nonstop since 6 a.m. The locker-room T's and the hats are a big seller" (DELAWARE COUNTY TIMES, 10/17).
