CBS College Sports Cuts 30 Employees, Including CMO McCauley

CBS College Sports laid off 30 employees Thursday as part of the channel's move away from studio-based programming. Most of the layoffs came from the channel's studio production department. The affected employees can stay with the channel through the first week in December. "In making a number of new carriage deals with cable operators and setting up new packages for advertisers, we have learned that live game coverage and high-definition telecasts bring real value to the network," said Exec VP & GM STEVE HERBST. "As a result, all of our resources will be focused on increasing those areas." Layoffs include JOHN MCCAULEY, who was hired a year ago as CMO. KELLY DUNN, VP/Marketing & Creative Services, will take over McCauley's marketing responsibilities. The channel still plans to produce some studio shows, including its "March Madness Central" show around the NCAA men's basketball tournament. But channel execs want to gain more cable and satellite distribution before investing too much in studio shows. CBS College Sports has 25 million subscribers. It is adding 2 million more Comcast subscribers through a deal that lets the Comcast-owned Golf Channel carry some weekend PGA tournaments. Network officials say several more carriage deals are in the offing over the next few weeks that should move the channel’s distribution past 30 million (John Ourand, THE DAILY). Herbst said that the shift to HD event coverage "was not a reaction to competition from ESPNU" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/17).
