BLOOMBERG NEWS' Andrew Harris reports Nike Monday filed suit in U.S. District Court in Illinois against Wal-Mart for "allegedly selling footwear that infringes one of the sportswear-maker's patented designs." Nike claimed that the Wal-Mart shoe "copies its own Shox line that features exposed piston-like cylinders in the heel." The complaint states, "Without Nike's authorization, Wal-Mart has offered for sale and sold in the United States shoes having designs that are covered by the Nike design patents." Nike "seeks a court order barring Wal-Mart from selling items that infringe two of its patents, plus unspecified money damages" (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 10/16).

CSN Bay Area Launches Campaign Supporting
Coverage Of Sharks, Warriors
NEW ATTITUDE: Comcast SportsNet (CSN) Bay Area launched a new campaign to support CSN's coverage of the Sharks and Warriors. The campaign was launched earlier this month and is set to run throughout the '08-09 NHL and NBA seasons. The tag line associated with the campaign is, "It's not that hard to find," which is aimed at reminding fans where to go for the team's broadcasts. The campaign features players from both teams hiding in obvious places in everyday settings (CSN Bay Area).

PLANNING AHEAD: In N.Y., John Branch reports in the weeks leading up to the MLB playoffs, Rays Clubhouse & Equipment Manager Chris Westmoreland "asked Nike about swim goggles to protect" players' eyes during locker-room celebrations, and the company "donated 48 pairs." Westmoreland also "thought to ensure that all the empty Champagne bottles and their popped corks were immediately authenticated by [MLB], using special hologram stickers" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/16).

NOTES: In St. Petersburg, Jay Cridlin notes Dunkin' Donuts' promo with the Rays, in which fans can get a free doughnut the morning after a win, has resulted in 253,170 giveaways this season. That is "more than double the number given away" in '07 (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 10/16)....Employees of Jacksonville-based W.W.
