Ratner Suspected Of Funneling Finances
Into Nonprofits Set Up By Marty Markowitz
Jazz Owner LARRY MILLER, who is recovering from a heart attack suffered in June, Thursday watched the Suns-Jazz preseason game from a wheelchair in the front row at EnergySolutions Arena. Miller "hopes to be able to walk on his own to his normal seat for games in the near future." Miller: "I'm still probably three or four weeks away from getting out of the wheelchair. But, hopefully, it will be less than that" (DESERET NEWS, 10/10).

FUNNELED FINANCES: In N.Y., Calder & Bennett report since '03, Nets Owner BRUCE RATNER and others involved in the $4B Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn have "quietly funneled at least $680,000 to three nonprofits set up" by Brooklyn Borough President MARTY MARKOWITZ. This includes "$275,000 to $590,000 combined from the Nets, Ratner's development company, Forest City Ratner, and its subsidiaries" (N.Y. POST, 10/10).

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE: Comcast-Spectacor President & COO PETER LUUKKO, a Univ. of Massachusetts alum, was the "man responsible for bringing the Celtics" to UMass' Mullins Center for Wednesday's Celtics-76ers preseason game. Celtics colors were "everywhere," even though the 76ers were the home team. Luukko, who grew up just outside Boston, said, "I'm absolutely 100[%] a 76er. I will say when I pick up the newspaper I always look to see how the Celts did, look at the standings" (DAILY HAMPSHIRE GAZETTE, 10/9).

THE LIGHTER SIDE OF TIGER: As part of an interview with NBC’s Jenna Wolfe, golfer TIGER WOODS said WILL SMITH should play him in a movie on his life story, and he always TiVoes Comedy Central’s “South Park.” When asked what his favorite band is, Woods said, “It depends. It can be hip-hop, it can be rap, it can be rock, it can be ‘80s.” Wolfe: “Could it be country?” Woods: “Oh, hell no” (“Today,” NBC, 10/10).

Nene would "retain ties to his native Brazil and be a dual citizen" (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 10/10).
