Fox Earns 6.0/10 Overnight For Dodgers-Phillies NLCS Game One

Fox Sports' Ed Goren Believes Red Sox-Dodgers
World Series Matchup Would Capture Attention |
Fox earned a 6.0/10 overnight Nielsen rating for Thursday night's Dodgers-Phillies NLCS Game One, which saw the Phillies win 3-2. The 6.0 is up 3.4% from a 5.8/11 overnight rating last year for Indians-Red Sox Game One of the ALCS, which was played on a Friday night. The game earned a 23.9/35 in Philadelphia and a 9.4/18 in L.A. (THE DAILY). DAILY VARIETY's Mike Flaherty wrote with the Cubs losing in the NLDS to the Dodgers, a Dodgers-Red Sox World Series "is now perceived as the dream ... matchup." Fox Sports President Ed Goren said, "If you're looking for drama that will capture the attention of the whole country, [Dodgers LF] Manny [Ramirez] going back into Boston for Game 1 is that national grabber." Sports Business Group President David Carter said Fox could have a "potential windfall for the World Series if it's the Dodgers and the Red Sox. That would be an instant classic" (DAILY VARIETY, 10/9). In San Diego, Jay Posner writes Fox is "desperate for a Dodgers-Red Sox World Series, with Phillies-Red Sox a distant second." A source from another net, when asked "how much it would mean to Fox to have the Red Sox instead of the Rays," said, "Can you say 'priceless?'" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/10). However, with the Phillies' Game One win, the L.A. TIMES' T.J. Simers writes under the header, "Phillies Could Ruin Must-See TV If This Keeps Up." Simers asks who wants "just another World Series other than boring baseball purists, knowing now the potential high jinks" that former Red Sox and current Dodgers LF Ramirez, 3B Nomar Garciaparra and P Derek Lowe, as well as manager Joe Torre, "might deliver in prime time?" (L.A. TIMES, 10/10).
BECOMING PART OF THE STORY: In Seattle, Gary Washburn writes Fox' Tim McCarver has "morphed from a quality color analyst to one of those aging complainers about today's modern athlete." McCarver earlier this week criticized Ramirez for "his behavior during his final days" with the Red Sox -- calling it "despicable" -- and that "can't be the type of publicity Fox wanted" leading into the NLCS. Washburn writes the "foremost responsibility of any journalist is not to become part of the story, and McCarver has broken that rule many times" (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 10/10). ESPN’s Bob Ley asked McCarver, “On reflection, is that the word you want to have stand on the record, ‘despicable?’” McCarver: “I don’t see any word that better describes the situation that Manny had in Boston that last week. I’m fine with it. I was fine with it when I said it” (“Outside The Lines,” ESPN, 10/8).

Reynolds Receives Positive Reviews For
Work On TBS' MLB Playoffs Coverage |
TBS REPORT CARD: In Orlando, Dave Darling writes, "For the most part, I've been impressed with TBS's postseason coverage." It has been "nice to see Harold Reynolds back in action, Buck Martinez and Ron Darling have been solid on analysis, and the camera work and graphics have been good." TBS also has "taken a page from [Fox'] book and used more player and fan closeups" (ORLANDO SENTINEL, 10/10). The SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER's Washburn writes, "We missed Harold Reynolds on the national baseball landscape. We missed his insight. ... We missed his smooth delivery" (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 10/10). In Edmonton, Crash Cameron writes TBS' playoff broadcasts have "looked sharp," and it is "great to hear Buck Martinez again" (EDMONTON SUN, 10/10). But in L.A., Steve Springer writes, "Something is missing from the TBS baseball studio show." Only "one Turner Sports broadcaster has that something, and he is nowhere in sight. Charles Barkley." Springer: "Call it charisma, call is personality, call it camera savvy. Barkley has it." Barkley said of joining TBS' baseball coverage, "If they asked me, I would do it. Heck, yeah." Barkley said of TBS' studio team, "I think it's unfair to throw these guys together at the last minute and expect it to work" (L.A. TIMES, 10/10).
GRAND SLAM: Tigers CF Curtis Granderson, who is working as part of TBS’ postseason studio crew, participated in a Q&A with AWFUL ANNOUNCING. He said the best thing for the net’s pregame show is “time.” Granderson: “As they get to the five-year mark of doing it, and testing what works and doesn’t, it could become an even better show.” As an active MLBer, Granderson said he has to “remember that I’m still currently playing the game, and I’m not a seasoned vet like some other guys in the game, so I have to be careful with what I say, because I have to play against these guys the next season.” Granderson: “I am also our team’s player rep and talk to a lot of other players around the league about numerous issues that aren’t reported about, so I need to keep that trust with them as well.” He said a broadcasting career after his playing days “could be a possibility” (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 10/10).
FOREIGN APPEAL: In St. Petersburg, Lane Degregory notes at the beginning of the '08 MLB season, Japanese native Rays 2B Akinori Iwamura's second season with the Rays, "six Tokyo reporters turned out." But Thursday's practice at Tropicana Field "drew a record" number with 27 Japanese reporters (ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, 10/10).
