League Notes

WNBA Commissioner Donna Orender, in a special to the DETROIT FREE PRESS, wrote the league "sits uniquely at the crossroads of Main Street U.S.A., with an atmosphere and accessibility that encourage families to gather for a game that speaks to America's values and work ethic." Orender: "In a day and age when community leaders, politicans and parents simply ask for positive role models for their children, we find one right in front of us: the WNBA." Orender added "after 12 years, the WNBA deserves more credit for what it has accomplished" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 10/8).

Editorial Criticizes NFL's
Treatment Of Concussions
SERIOUS ISSUE: A SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE editorial stated NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell "with the baffling cooperation of the NFL players union -- continues to allow players who suffer concussions to practice the very next day, contradicting neurologists who advise extreme caution when dealing with brain injuries." Meanwhile, ESPN -- "the media behemoth which largely defines the image of the NFL, its corporate partner -- is a silent partner in this barbarism." After a replay of Bills QB Trent Edwards suffering a concussion early in Sunday's game against the Cardinals, "some of ESPN's announcers seemed to find Edwards' dazed look almost comic." ESPN "should be ashamed of its blitheness about concussions," and "so should the NFL" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 10/7).

BUDDING RIVALRY? In S.F., Scott Ostler writes under the header, "LPGA Needs Creamer To Challenge Ochoa." LPGA member Lorena Ochoa "is the Tiger Woods of the LPGA Tour," but "unlike Tiger, she could use a little help carrying her sport." Ostler: "That's why [LPGA member Paula] Creamer is just what the doctor ordered for the LPGA Tour. ... If she can become a consistent winner, rivaling Ochoa, the women get a huge boost." Women's golf "would benefit from a good rivalry at the top, like what women's tennis had when Chris Evert and Martina Navratilova were friendly enemies" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 10/9).

APPROACH SHOT: CBSSPORTS.com's Steve Elling reported PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem "will be laying down a series of tunes" for the tour's Player Advisory Council BOD Tuesday "as it relates to possible fixes for the 2009 FedEx points structure." At Tour HQs, "a series of offbeat proposals are being vetted, and it's possible that a new system could be ratified by the final Policy Board meeting of the year on Nov. 10." Otherwise, "the hand-ringing could stretch into the next meeting in February." PGA Tour Senior Dir of Communications & Strategy Steve Dennis: "I can tell you there is interest in getting this done by November. But I think it's going to be difficult" (CBSSPORTS.com, 10/8).
