A Reason For Cancelling Yankee Stadium Farewell |
The Yankees had planned a concert for November 9 as a "final farewell" to Yankee Stadium, but the organization, "fearing a less-than-memorable lineup, have bagged the celebration," according to Mark Feinsand of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Yankees Media Relations Dir Jason Zillo in a statement said, "The Yankees were considering having a charitable event at Yankee Stadium. However, the Yankees realize that the final event at Yankee Stadium should be a baseball game, which in fact took place on Sept. 21." Feinsand noted Bruce Springsteen, Jay-Z, Paul McCartney and Billy Joel were "among the rumored performers" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 10/8). In New York, Peter Abraham reports outside of singer Paul Simon, the Yankees "had been unable to get assurances as to who would show up." The team had hired NBC's "Saturday Night Live" Producer Lorne Michaels to "help procure the entertainment" (Westchester JOURNAL NEWS, 10/9).
A NEW CATHEDRAL: In N.Y., George King toured the new Yankee Stadium and writes MLBers "would have to be crazy not to want to play in the palace," which is "1.4 million square feet of tasteful elegance that marries old and new very well." King notes, "Every player's whim has been addressed. An underground parking lot with an elevator dedicated to the clubhouse. A colossal weight room. Two therapy pools. A state-of-the-art video room and a batting cage between the dugout and the clubhouse." In addition, there is a "food room with a full kitchen that will be staffed" (N.Y. POST, 10/9).
