NFL Utilizing "Coach Stilo" To Lure, Teach Game To Overseas Fans

Edwards To Narrate Highlights In NFL's Latest
Attempt To Explain Football Overseas
The NFL, in advance of the October 26 Saints-Chargers game at London's Wembley Stadium, is unveiling "Coach Stilo," the league's "latest attempt to teach the basics of a game as foreign and complex to those outside the U.S. as cricket is to Americans," according to Matthew Futterman of the WALL STREET JOURNAL. The fictional coach will present an online three-hour, eight chapter tutorial on football that is "part online seminar, part situation comedy, part highlight film." Highlight packages will be narrated by Bills QB Trent Edwards and NFL Giants C Shaun O'Hara. The program avoids "too many X's and O's drawn in chalk or too much talk about nickel defenses," and instead explains "how points are scored, then quiz viewers on what they have learned." NFL Senior VP/Sales & Marketing Mark Waller: "We've got to get people to a level of understanding so that when we play games abroad or broadcast them, people will actually pay attention. ... It's the most complicated sport on the planet. If we can create an understanding, that will make a huge difference." Futterman notes the presentation is available in five languages -- English, Spanish, French, Japanese and Mandarin (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 10/9).
