New MLB Giants Leader Neukom Looks To Redefine Team Approach

Neukom Holds First Press
Conference Since Assuming Control
MLB Giants Managing General Partner Bill Neukom yesterday held his first press conference since officially taking over the club from Peter Magowan Monday, and indicated that he "wants to recreate the franchise" and will publish a manual he plans to call "The Giants' Way," according to Ray Ratto of the S.F. CHRONICLE. Neukom: "We want to develop a Giants Way of playing baseball." Neukom said of the manual, "This was my idea, though I know that there has been a Dodger Way and an Oriole Way. We're not leading the pack on this, but I think this way we can have better communication throughout the organization about what we need to make our young players up and down the organization better prepared and conditioned for the rigors of the major leagues." Ratto notes the credo "displays an interest in the development end that came to Neukom's predecessor too late in the game, and a tacit acknowledgment that it is a cheaper way to go in times that require greater thrift." Neukom's presser yesterday also "spoke to buzzwords and flexibility, as he committed to nothing with specificity and easy-to-defend platitudes galore." Ratto notes Neukom "chose to be non-committal even about how often he'd be seen at the plant to supervise the implementation of The Way" (S.F. CHRONICLE, 10/8).

A GOOD FIRST IMPRESSION: In San Jose, Andrew Baggarly writes Neukom, who formerly served as Microsoft General Counsel, yesterday was "ever the shrewd attorney during his first question-and-answer session with reporters." Neukom indicated that the team's payroll "depends" and that the future of Giants GM Brian Sabean and manager Bruce Bochy was "to be determined, by mutual agreement." Neukom told Sabean that an $80M payroll is "more of a placeholder than a rigid figure." Neukom noted that he has "asked Sabean not to 'be limited entirely by the notion that you have 'X' amount of dollars to spend for '09.'" Neukom instead said Sabean should "think somewhat out of the box and be creative about this. Look more broadly. Don't look for easy answers." Neukom indicated that he "sees the value in advanced statistical analysis and wants to integrate certain ideals of the 'Moneyball' approach" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 10/8).
