All He Can Be: U.S. Army To Sponsor Newman's Ride For 22 Races In '09

U.S. Army To Sponsor Newman's
Stewart-Haas Ride For 22 Races Next Year
Stewart-Haas Racing officials tomorrow are expected to announce a deal for the U.S. Army to "serve as primary sponsor" in 22 races next season for the No. 39 Sprint Cup Series car driven by Ryan Newman, according to sources cited by Lee Spencer of FOXSPORTS.com. The sources added that Stewart-Haas has made "significant progress in finding sponsorship for the remaining 14 races for Newman's ride" (FOXSPORTS.com, 10/7). The Army this year is sponsoring DEI's No. 8 Sprint Cup entry driven by Mark Martin and Aric Almirola, and SI.com's Tom Bowles wrote the Army partnering with Newman will prove to be "far more lucrative than taking chances with unproven" Almirola for a full season (SI.com, 10/2).

ON THE OUTS: ESPN.com's Terry Blount reported Gillett Evernham Motorsports (GEM) yesterday released driver Patrick Carpentier. The team's No. 10 Dodge will be driven by Mike Wallace at Saturday's Bank of America 500 at Lowe's Motor Speedway, and A.J. Allmendinger "will drive the car in this season's final five races." Blount noted Carpentier "already was a lame duck at GEM," which in August announced that driver Reed Sorenson "would drive for the team in 2009." Carpentier wrote on his Web site that he "got into an argument and skirmish Saturday with team director Mike Shiplett, who blamed him for failing" to qualify for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Amp Energy 500 at Talladega Superspeedway (ESPN.com, 10/7).

GIVING BACK: NASCAR driver Regan Smith for Saturday's Bank of America 500 will wear a special Hurricanes-themed helmet. Smith will donate the helmet to the Kids 'N Community Foundation for a charity auction following the race (Hurricanes).
