NHL Breaking New National "Is This The Year?" Ad Campaign

Watch This Clip
The NHL will unveil a national marketing campaign today built around the slogan "Is this the year?" Four national TV spots featuring the slogan and Penguins C Sidney Crosby, Flames D Dion Phaneuf, Blackhawks RW Patrick Kane and Rangers G Henrik Lundqvist will debut on NHL.com. The spots will appear later on Versus, the CBC, TSN, RDS, NHL Network and regional broadcast carriers. For the first time, each team will make two spots of its own using the league slogan and imagery, as well. The national spots merge still photography from Getty Images with interviews with the athletes. In one of the spots, Crosby comes alive within a photograph taken right after his team lost the '08 Stanley Cup Final against the Red Wings. He says: “This is a tough one. ... I never want to be in this photograph again.” The other spots are similar in style and commentary. The campaign was created by Young & Rubicam (Tripp Mickle, SportsBusiness Journal). In N.Y., Tim Arango reports the campaign is valued at more than $15M. NHL Exec VP/Marketing Brian Jennings said of the campaign, "We talk a lot in the marketing department that we have to be the voice of the fan. It's an internal creed." Jennings added that "part of that ... is 'using our stars in a heroic way'" (N.Y. TIMES, 10/1).

STARRY-EYED SURPRISE: The Stars and Door Number 3, Austin, today are launching an updated version of the team's "Come into the Cold" ad campaign promoting the '08-09 season. The campaign was first launched last year in support of the '07-08 season. The campaign will feature 14' x 48' billboards, which will be located throughout the greater Dallas area, with each picturing a Stars player in uniform. Bold and short headlines over a darkened background will be used and will be accompanied with the tagline, "Our Team, Our Time." Stars pictured in the campaign will include G Marty Turco, LW Brenden Morrow, C Mike Modano, C Mike Ribeiro, RW Jere Lehtinen and D Sergei Zubov (Door Number 3). The DALLAS MORNING NEWS last month provided a behind-the-scenes look of the ad shoot.

CHICAGO HOPE: In Chicago, Lewis Lazare reviewed the Blackhawks' new TV ad campaign titled "One Goal" that broke last weekend. The spots, via Ogilvy & Mather, Chicago, are a "bit barebones, and the players don't get to say much." Each 30-second spot "is actually comprised of two 15-second executions," and "in each instance, a Blackhawk player skates up to a microphone set on the ice and simply says a few words." Yet, "these brief here-are-the-players TV spots at least will give the team more of a public face." Lazare gave the campaign a "B" grade (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 9/30).
