Shea Stadium Farewell Lost In Disappointment Of Mets' Collapse

Mets' Collapse Dampens Festivities
Around Shea Stadium Farewell
The Mets "staged a lovely farewell to Shea Stadium on Sunday that succeeded with its tacit admission that the last 44 years have not always been grand," but the "problem is that the emotional wallop of such a well-produced Shea goodbye came at precisely the wrong time of day," according to Richard Sandomir of the N.Y. TIMES. The celebration occurred after the Mets were eliminated from the playoffs by a loss to the Marlins, resulting in a "wake, not a nostalgic pep rally." Taken as a "production unto itself, the farewell worked very well," but "consider the possible impact of seeing [Baseball HOFer Tom Seaver and former MLBer Mike Piazza] close the center-field gates together had it occurred before the game." Still, the Mets in the ceremony "embraced the team's not-so-greats," and did what the Yankees did not in their "sloppy, not-very-creative farewell to Yankee Stadium" on September 21 (N.Y. TIMES, 9/30).

STADIUM SECURITY: CRAIN'S N.Y. BUSINESS' Hilary Potkewitz reported the "new challenge" facing Yankee Stadium is "protecting the stadium from would-be looters eager to take home a piece" of the ballpark. The N.Y. Police Department during the season "had a 65-officer unit stationed at Yankee Stadium to handle game-day traffic and security," but now that unit is "closing up shop and will be gone in a matter of weeks." The Yankees have "hired a private security firm to protect the building," but a Yankees spokesperson "declined to offer details as to numbers." Meanwhile, the city of N.Y. and the Yankees "have yet to agree on how to split the proceeds" from sales of the stadium's memorabilia (CRAINSNEWYORK.com, 9/28).
