Bills, Sabres Winning Sponsors In Spite Of Tough Economic Times

Sabres Gaining Sponsors
Despite Current Financial Crisis |
Despite the current financial crisis, the Bills and Sabres "say sponsorship dollars remain strong," according to James Fink of BUSINESS FIRST OF BUFFALO. Both teams "have sold a record number of tickets" and the two clubs combined have sold "nearly 240 private suites" at Ralph Wilson Stadium and HSBC Arena. The Sabres also "scored a sponsorship coup" by signing a five-year deal with Coca-Cola of Buffalo for the exclusive pouring rights at HSBC Arena, effective tomorrow. The deal, which also gives Coca-Cola "arena signage and promotional tie-ins," marks the "first time that Coke has been the exclusive soft drink at the arena." Meanwhile, M&T Bank "signed a new five-year pact with the Bills" on September 18, giving M&T "exclusive rights to advertise and promote its products inside Ralph Wilson Stadium and at the team's training camp at St. John Fisher College" in Rochester. M&T also "is the only bank allowed to use the Bills' trademarked logo on checks and credit cards." Sabres Owner Tom Golisano said of the economy, "I'm not worried about the Sabres, per se. I'm more worried about what the impact will be in Buffalo and Western New York." Sabres VP/Sales & Business Development John Livsey said that the Sabres "are seeing some local companies cut back on ad time for this season's TV telecasts, yet the team has picked up several new sponsors this year, including local attorney Herschel Gelber and Allstate." Bills Senior VP/Business Ventures Pete Guelli: "If this continues, we could start seeing some cutbacks next year, but at this point, it would just be a guess on my part" (BUSINESS FIRST OF BUFFALO, 9/26 issue).
