NBC Sees Strong Demo Ratings For "SNF," But Likely To Lose Week

NBC Likely To Lose Week Despite Strong
Ratings From Eagles-Bears "SNF" Game
NBC’s coverage of Eagles-Bears “Sunday Night Football” earned a 10.8/17 national rating and drew 17.3 million viewers, a 15% increase in both categories over the comparable Eagles-Giants game in '07 (9.4/15). "SNF" was the top-rated broadcast program during the first week of the primetime season in all key male demos, and ranked third among all adults 18-49 (THE DAILY). DAILY VARIETY's Rick Kissell reports despite the strong "SNF" showing, ABC "is projected" to win the week ending September 28 in the 18-49 demo with a 3.8 rating (DAILY VARIETY, 9/30). NBC did win Sunday night among adults 18-49 with a 5.4/14 rating, besting ABC and Fox, which tied with a 4.4/11 (MEDIAPOST.com, 9/30). USA TODAY's Michael Hiestand writes the Bears are a "TV draw. Especially when they're pretty good." Meanwhile, Fox' late-window Redskins-Cowboys broadcast Sunday was "up 22% from comparable coverage last year," and Hiestand writes Fox's NFC TV package "gets boosts as its big-market teams this season are seen as powerhouses" (USA TODAY, 9/30).

TIME FOR A CHANGE: In Milwaukee, Bob Wolfley noted all NFL pregame shows Sunday mentioned the death of Buccaneers K Matt Bryant's three-month-old son last week. ESPN's Chris Berman, though, "went a step further" and "wondered if the league should take its cue from baseball, which has a bereavement policy in place for players" (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 9/29). ESPN's Chris Mortensen said, "I spoke to members of the Competition Committee late (last) week and they agreed that on a roster, you have back-ups at every position, except kicker and punter, and they really believe that this merits some discussion in the off-season to allow for something exactly like what we’ve seen with Matt Bryant” (“Sunday NFL Countdown,” ESPN, 9/28).

PACKING IT UP? Viewers watching Packers-Buccaneers on WLUK-Fox Sunday "were informed by a scroll that it could be the last game they'd see on [WLUK] because of a contract dispute" between WLUK parent company LIN TV and Time Warner Cable (TWC). A "temporary extension of the contract" between LIN TV and TWC expires Thursday (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 9/29).
