Federal Authorities Investigating
Johnson's Nonprofit Program
Officials Thursday said that federal authorities "investigating a nonprofit program run" by Sacramento mayoral candidate and former NBAer KEVIN JOHNSON have "suspended its funding after finding possible criminal and financial irregularities." Johnson and Scaramento's St. Hope Academy, which Johnson founded, "have been barred from receiving or spending federal funds for up to a year or until the ongoing investigation is concluded." One of the charges against Johnson is that he "used federally funded AmeriCorps members to drive him to personal appointments, wash his car and run errands" (L.A. TIMES, 9/26).

LAWSUIT SETTLEMENT: Former San Diego State Univ. swimming coach DEENA DEARDRUFF SCHMIDT has reached a $1.45M settlement in her Title IX "sex discrimination lawsuit against the school," which was filed last November. The settlement includes a $317,420 "lump sum and $682,580 in an annuity." Schmidt in the suit alleged "several years of mistreatment at the school, plus 'unequal and inadequate' facilities, pay, practice times and administrative support" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/26).

TOO FAST, TOO FURIOUS: CBS’ “Early Show” Friday aired a segment titled “I Know What You Did Last Summer” in which CBS’ RUSS MITCHELL was given racing lessons by IRL driver DAN WHELDON at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Wheldon took Mitchell for a ride in a double-seat Indy car and told him, “My goal here is to try and make you throw up” (“Early Show,” CBS, 9/26).

NAMES: Actress EVA LONGORIA PARKER sent Rays 3B EVAN LONGORIA a "bottle of champagne after his successes on the baseball field turned him into a regular on US sports news shows." Evan Longoria, in return, sent the actress a Rays shirt. The two are not related (TIMES OF INDIA, 9/25)....Singer ALANIS MORISSETTE will perform via satellite from Montreal during the NHL Face-Off Rocks viewing party in Detroit on October 9 (NHL)....Talladega Superspeedway has named PGA Tour member BOO WEEKLEY as the honorary starter for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Amp Energy 500 on October 5 (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 9/25)....The NBA D-League Ft. Wayne Mad Ants will be featured on the CW's "One Tree Hill" this Monday at 9:00pm ET. The show will also begin including SlamBall in a storyline beginning with the October 13 episode (THE DAILY).
