MLBPA Resolves Rookie Contract Disputes Of Alvarez, Hosmer

The MLBPA has resolved two of the rookie contract-related grievances it recently filed against the Office of the Commissioner. Draft pick 3B Pedro Alvarez and the Pirates have agreed to an MLB contract, and Alvarez will now be removed from the Restricted List. Also Royals draft pick 1B Eric Hosmer will be allowed to resume playing and will be compensated for the time missed during the dispute. The agreement stipulates that the Commissioner's Office may not unilaterally extend or modify the signing deadline agreed to in the CBA (MLBPA). In Pittsburgh, Rob Biertempfel reports the finalization of Alvarez' contract had been delayed by the MLBPA grievances, in which the union claimed that MLB "unilaterally allowed teams, including the Pirates, to negotiate with agents for drafted players beyond the midnight deadline." The second grievance "challenged MLB's directive that sidelined" Hosmer, "pending the outcome of the first grievance." Both Alvarez and Hosmer are repped by agent Scott Boras. The Pirates and Alvarez yesterday finalized a four-year contract worth a guaranteed $6.355M, though it could ultimately reach $8M. The deal includes a $6M signing bonus, the "same amount Alvarez verbally agreed to" August 15, though his six-week holdout "wound up netting Alvarez a better financial deal" (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 9/25).

WORKING BOTH SIDES OF THE PLATE: MLB Exec VP/Labor Relations Rob Manfred said of the settlement, "We fully support and welcome the changes to the manner in which the deadline will be administered." MLBPA Associate Counsel Mike Weiner: "The agreement fully satisfies the union's objective, made clear from the outset, which was to defend the integrity of its [CBAs]." Pirates President Frank Coonelly in a conference call said he felt the new deal was "comparable in value" to the original contract. Boras, who originally was not scheduled to participate in the conference call, "later entered and called the new deal 'a favorable change for Pedro Alvarez ... much different than the one previously offered'" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 9/25). A PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE editorial states, "The legal wrangling stifled whatever joy the Pirates stood to reap from landing a player of Pedro Alvarez's caliber. ... Now that all of that is behind the team, his development as a player ... could make Pirates baseball fun to watch again. With this year's average game attendance the lowest in PNC Park history, the team could use two or three Pedro Alvarezes" (PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 9/25).
