Spanos Funding Petition Drive In Opposition
To Stockton City Council's General Plan 
LEGAL NEWSLINE's Scott Sabatini reported Chargers and A.G. Spanos Co. Owner ALEX SPANOS has funded a petition drive and has formed a group called the Alliance for Responsible Planning to "thwart a recent agreement reached" between the Stockton (CA) City Council and California Attorney General JERRY BROWN's office. Spanos' company "is backing a campaign to force a referendum on the City Council's settlement with Brown regarding its General Plan," which is "designed to advance green building codes, reduce greenhouse gas emissions on all future building projects, and direct growth back into the city downtown in an effort to limit urban sprawl" (LEGALNEWSLINE.com, 9/22).

CHARITY STRIPE: The Astros in Action Foundation, in conjunction with the Houston Food Bank and Academy Sports & Outdoors, today through Sunday will hold a food and supplies drive to aid victims of Hurricane Ike. Also, "cash collection stations will be set up" at Minute Maid Park. The team will hold a silent auction at the Team Store in Union Station, where fans will be able to “bid on Astros autographed and game-used merchandise” (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/23)....The Yankees are donating $1M supporting relief efforts for victims of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The contributions will be split between the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army (BLOOMBERG NEWS, 9/22). 

AWARDS & HONORS: Toronto Sun baseball columnist BOB ELLIOTT and former CBC analyst BRIAN MCFARLANE "will be honoured with achievement awards" at the annual Sports Media Canada luncheon October 16 at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. The luncheon "recognizes excellence in sports journalism" (TORONTO SUN, 9/19)....Late Hockey HOFer ANATOLI TARASOV last Tuesday was named the winner of the WAYNE GRETZKY Int'l Award. The award, which was created by the U.S. Hockey HOF in '99, is awarded to "international individuals who have made major contributions to the growth and advancement of hockey" in the U.S. (NATIONAL POST, 9/17).

Phelps Auctioning Off Private Swim
Lessons Package For Charity 
NAMES: U.S. Olympic swimmer MICHAEL PHELPS has agreed to auction off a package, entitling two adults and a child to take private swim lessons with him for an Animal Care & Control charity event on Thursday (N.Y. POST, 9/22)….Broncos coach MIKE SHANAHAN has signed a deal with Denver restaurateur MARC STERON to open a new steak and seafood restaurant called Shanahan’s. The restaurant, scheduled to open in ’09, will have 300 seats and a bar that the owners “hope will rival the popularity” of Pro Football HOFer JOHN ELWAY’s steakhouses (ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, 9/23)....NBC’s TIKI BARBER and his brother, Buccaneers CB RONDE BARBER, this morning appeared on NBC’s “Today” to promote their fifth children’s book, “GO LONG!” (“Today,” NBC, 9/23).
