ATP Hires Search Firm To Help
Find Successor To De Villiers
SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL's Daniel Kaplan cites sources as saying that the ATP Tour has "hired executive search firm Spencer Stuart" to identify a successor to ATP Chair & President Etienne de Villiers, who plans to step down at the end of the year. Spencer Stuart is "expected to cast a wide net," though tennis sources are "expecting an insider from the sport" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 9/22 issue).

ADVISORY ADDS: In Toronto, Tony Van Alphen reports former Canadian Auto Workers President Buzz Hargrove has "agreed to join a special group of the NHLPA that would advise the association on key issues." Sources said that the union has "appointed at least two retired players to the eight-member group," one of which is former NHLPA Dir of Player Relations Steve Larmer. The sources added that former Molson CEO Daniel O'Neill also will be a member of the advisory group, and labor lawyer Ron Pink will serve as Chair of the group. Van Alphen notes Molson served as the primary owner of the Canadiens until '01 (TORONTO STAR, 9/23).

DAVIS DUD: In San Diego, Jerry Magee writes the Davis Cup is "ceasing to have relevance," as in its "current format it does not have the razzle-dazzle that today's audiences crave." Magee: "Instead of an event that occupies the teams that go deep into the eliminations from February through November, gather the 16 squads that form the World Group at a single site and let a winner be decided within days rather than over a period of months. For the Davis Cup to be contested every other year instead of annually also would be acceptable" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/23).
