NBC's "SNF" Coverage Of Cowboys-Packers
Earns 13.3/21 National Rating, up 12.7%
NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” earned a 13.3/21 national Nielsen rating (22.2 million viewers) for Cowboys-Packers, up 12.7% from an 11.8/19 for the comparable Cowboys-Bears last year (19.0 million viewers). The 22.2 million viewers marks the second-most viewed “SNF” game since NBC re-acquired NFL rights before the ’06 season, coming in behind the debut “SNF” game featuring Colts-Giants in ’06 (22.6 million). The 13.3 rating also marks the fourth-highest rated “SNF” game (THE DAILY).

FAREWELL, OLD FRIEND: In Atlanta, Chip Towers reports Univ. of Georgia (UGA) football radio broadcaster Larry Munson yesterday retired effective immediately after 43 seasons calling UGA football games. A school statement noted that Munson made his decision over the weekend. Munson "gave up traveling to road games last season" and had "worked only Georgia's two home games this season." UGA football analyst Scott Howard, who had called games in Munson's absence, "will take over at the main mic for the rest of the season," while Eric Zeier "assumes Howard's color commentary duties" (ATLANTA CONSTITUTION, 9/23).

RADIO DAZE: Bonneville Int'l St. Louis Radio Group VP & Market Manager John Kijowski said that WMVN-FM "will be converted Jan. 1 to a sports-talk format." Kijowski added that the station "will change its call letters and carry local morning and afternoon drive-time shows, and possibly a St. Louis-based midday program." Kijowski also said that he signed the deal "to whisk ESPN away from Big League Broadcasting," which owns KFNS-AM, KFNS-FM and KRFT-AM. KRFT-AM now airs ESPN Radio content (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 9/23)....YES President of Production & Programming John Filippelli said that the net has "had a discussion with Mike [Francesa] and let him and WFAN know we're certainly interested" in continuing to simulcast Francesa's radio show. The net's contract to simulcast the former "Mike and the Mad Dog" show expires this year (NEWSDAY, 9/23).

NOTES: FSN Florida this season is averaging a 3.5 HH rating (63,000 HHs) for Rays games in the Tampa/St. Petersburg market, up 94.4% from a 1.8 HH rating (32,000 HHs) during the same time period last season (FSN Florida)....MSG Network "has bought six sports documentaries produced by ESPN for scheduling in the biweekly movie showcase 'MSG at the Movies.'" The movies are part of a MSG strategy to "find more primetime programming to complement the sports events that make up the bulk of MSG's schedule" (DAILY VARIETY, 9/23).
