Seattle-Based Peel Sports Set To Debut Online In Mid-November

Peel Sports Focusing
On Accessories Market
Upstart Seattle-based sporting goods company Peel Sports is "targeting the accessories market ... instead of going head-to-head with the biggest names in apparel by offering similar products," according to Bill Virgin of the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER. The company is launching with 34 products consisting mainly of items "specifically designed for runners, bikers and fitness enthusiasts." Those include backpacks and laptop bags "molded and designed to fit high on and close to the back; water-bottle carriers; armbands for wallets or portable music players; totes for travelers to carry their running gear in a suitcase without contaminating the rest of its contents; [and] hats with interior pockets to carry cash or a credit card." Peel's products will be available on Amazon.com and "at least one other major retailer's Web site by mid-November," and in specialty retailers by the Christmas season. Peel Sports co-Founders Brock Reed and Tom Lukens are "encouraged by the fact that as powerful as the big names are in sporting goods equipment and apparel, there is still room for a newcomer." Reed: "I'd like to be the next Under Armour. There's still a thirst for the next big thing that consumers want to latch on to, that they think is cool." Virgin reports Tim Mak, who owns several factories in China, is "providing initial financing for Peel Sports and will do the manufacturing, while Lukens and Reed will take care of design, sales and marketing." Peel Sports "won't shun apparel entirely," as they plan to "unveil several pieces later this year, but with technological twists" (SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER, 9/23).
