McNair Helping Raise Money
For Hurricane Relief Effort
Texans Owner BOB MCNAIR yesterday said that team has started "an effort to raise $2[M] to help in the relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts of those affected by Hurricane Ike." McNair has already donated $500,000 of his own money to the campaign, called "Texans helping Texans," while the NFL and the NFLPA "each contributed $500,000 through the league's disaster relief fund" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 9/22).

GREEN ACRES: PRESIDENT BUSH Friday honored the Celtics for their '07-08 NBA Championship in a ceremony at the White House. Celtics F PAUL PIERCE presented Bush with a basketball signed by the team and a "green jersey with the No. 43." Pierce also announced that the Celtics would donate $100,000 to victims of Hurricane Ike (BOSTON HERALD, 9/20). Meanwhile, Celtics CEO & Managing Partner WYC GROUSBECK has added Celtics G RAY ALLEN's wife, SHANNON, as a vocalist in his band, called French Lick. Grousbeck is the drummer in the band, which Saturday night played at a benefit, where they "wowed the crowd" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/22).

NAMES: Hurricanes Owner PETER KARMANOS and Tigers and Red Wings Owner MIKE ILITCH, along with Cavaliers Owner DAN GILBERT, have "committed undisclosed sums to construction" of a new $103M "curbside light-rail transit loop on Detroit's Woodward Avenue" (CRAINSDETROIT.com, 9/19)....76ers G ANDRE MILLER, who "has been without an agent," has hired ASM Sports' ANDY MILLER for representation. Miller most recently was repped by Williams & Connolly's LON BABBY (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 9/20)....Maryland state Delegate SANDY ROSENBERG said that he "plans to propose a resolution in the state Legislature during the 2009 session that renames" the Maryland Million horse race the JIM MCKAY Maryland Million, in memory of the late broadcaster who "dreamed up the event that started" in '86 (Baltimore SUN, 9/20)....Pro Football HOFer DAN MARINO sold his 9,286-square-foot, seven bedroom house in Parkland, Florida, for $2.35M, $600,000 less than what he paid for it in '05 (MIAMI HERALD, 9/20).

IN MEMORY: Former Winston-Salem Journal sports writer and Twin City Sentinel Sports Editor MARY GARBER, the only woman to win the APSE's Red Smith Award, died yesterday at the age of 92 (L.A. TIMES, 9/22).
