Columnists Note Kornheiser Still Has Work
Cut Out For Him In "MNF" Broadcast Booth
In Miami, Barry Jackson writes ESPN's "MNF" presentation "still has issues, despite consistently good work" from play-by-play announcer Mike Tirico and analyst Ron Jaworski. Analyst Tony Kornheiser "remains largely superfluous, at times irritating, and ESPN's new graphics seem more intrusive than they need to be." Jackson: "There is a fine line between offering big-picture perspective and stating the obvious, and Kornheiser crosses that line too often." Jackson lists the "exceptional super-slow-motion replays" and Tirico's play-by-play calling as an example of "what's good about" the program (MIAMI HERALD, 9/19). In San Diego, Jay Posner writes Kornheiser "hasn't quite lived up to expectations -- mine or anyone else's." Posner: "But I do agree when he says he thinks he's improving" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 9/19).

CARRIAGE NEWS: In St. Louis, Dan Caesar reports a "record 77 Blues games will be available on television locally this season, up from 69 last year." FSN Midwest will carry 51 games, while KPLR-CW will air 21 games, 19 of which are on weekends. Versus also has five Blues games in its national package. FSN Midwest will broadcast "at least 30 of the games" in HD (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 9/19)....WWOR-MYT and the YES Network have signed a three-year extension that will keep WWOR as the exclusive broadcast home of the Yankees through the 2011 MLB season. WWOR will present a total of 21 games per year in HD (YES).

NOTES: In N.Y., Phil Mushnick writes ESPN's "Outside the Lines" not only "remains a strong show within a sports network that often uses sports as a promotional prop, it remains one of the strongest magazine/investigative shows in all TV." The show this Sunday will include a feature on the 30th anniversary of the death of Lyman Bostock, the "only MLB player murdered during a season" (N.Y. POST, 9/19)....Free agent WR Troy Brown Thursday night was scheduled to appear on CSN New England's "Mohegan Sun Sports Tonight" to announce a new "three-times-a-week" analyst job on the show, but late Thursday Brown told CSN that he "would not be reporting for duty" (BOSTON HERALD, 9/19).
