Charity Stripe: NASCAR Steps Forward To Aid Hurricane Victims

Johnson, Lowe's Raising
Money For Red Cross Initiative
NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson and Lowe's at this weekend's Sprint Cup Series Camping World RV 400 at Dover Int'l Speedway will raise funds for the American Red Cross' "Racing for Relief" initiative, which helps provide food, shelter, counseling and other assistance to victims of hurricanes. Lowe's will donate $48 for every lap that Johnson completes in the race. If Johnson wins the race, Lowe's will donate an additional $4,800. Also, the Red Cross logo Sunday will be displayed on the deck lid of Johnson's No. 48 Chevy. Meanwhile, Nationwide Insurance has granted $275,000 to the Red Cross for hurricane relief. The grant brings the Nationwide Foundation's disaster relief donations for '08 to a total of $1M (THE DAILY).

BREEDERS' CUP: WebMD Chair Martin Wygod and co-Chair Pamela Wygod, both thoroughbred owners and breeders, have donated $250,000 to Breeders' Cup Charities on behalf of the WebMD Foundation. The donation is the first contribution from the thoroughbred industry to Breeders' Cup Charities, whose primary beneficiaries this year are Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (Breeders' Cup).

MAKING AN IMPACTA: MLB.com's Bill Ladson reported Nationals manager Manny Acta's charitable foundation, the impACTA Kids Foundation, "presented two students from [DC] with a $2,500 scholarship to be used towards higher education." The students were recognized during a ceremony before Thursday night's Mets-Nationals game. Also, the Nationals and partner the UPS Store "unveiled a new reading corner at Garrison Elementary School in Northwest [DC]" (MLB.com, 9/18).
