UNCC Aiming For Football By 2013, Must Raise $5M In Six Months

Univ. of North Carolina-Charlotte (UNCC) Chancellor Phil Dubois Thursday recommended that the school "field a football team by 2013, but with only one lofty condition to measure support: Fans need to raise $5[M] in six months to help build a $45.3[M] stadium complex," according to David Perlmutt of the CHARLOTTE OBSERVER. Dubois suggested that the $5M be "raised by selling 5,000 [PSLs]," which "would sell for $1,000 each." Dubois: "The cold stark financial reality we face is that those who say they want football are going to have to help pay for football." Dubois and UNCC AD Judy Rose said that they would "prefer an on-campus, expandable stadium, starting with 12,000 seats." Under Dubois' plan, the team would start playing in the Football Championship Subdivision, and UNCC "would not try to elevate the program" to the Bowl Subdivision until 2016 (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 9/19).
COSTLY VENTURE: In Charlotte, Scott Fowler notes even with PSLs, Dubois' budget for a $45M stadium "comes up at least $25[M] short." Dubois, when asked where that extra money will come from, said, "Who knows? Certainly as I go around the community, I hear a lot of people say, 'Boy, wouldn't that be great (to have a football team at Charlotte). Now, whether that translates into real money is anybody's guess." Fowler writes, "I think Charlotte should field a college football team and that this is a solid plan. But like you, I'm not about to write a $25[M] check to make it happen" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 9/19).
