MLB Civil Rights Game Moving To Cincinnati For '09, 2010 Editions

MLB's Civil Rights Game, which the past two years was held as a preseason exhibition at AutoZone Park in Memphis, is "moving to Cincinnati" for the next two seasons and will be a part of the regular-season schedule, according to Jim Masilak of the Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL. The '09 game will feature White Sox-Reds on June 20. Triple-A PCL Memphis Redbirds President of Baseball Operations Dave Chase, the game's creator, said that he "learned about 10 days ago that the game would not return to Memphis next year despite a multiyear offer from AutoZone to continue as its title sponsor." MLB Exec VP/Baseball Operations Jimmie Lee Solomon: "We knew when we went to Memphis that we would grow this and turn it into a regular-season game." Masilak writes with a "number of [MLB] clubs said to be interested in hosting the event and MLB's desire to give the game regular-season status -- not to mention lackluster attendance figures here, especially this year -- it was only a matter of time before the Civil Rights Game left town." This year's Mets-White Sox Civil Rights Game drew only 7,717 fans, though it coincided with the Texas-Memphis NCAA men's basketball tournament game. Chase acknowledged that the "empty seats played a part in the decision," but he was also "critical of the way MLB promoted the game" (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 9/19). The Reds and the city of Cincinnati "will host the 2010 game as well, although the opponent and date were not announced" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 9/19).
