Welcome Matt: Barnaby Expected To Become New ESPN NHL Analyst

Barnaby Expected To Be Named
ESPN Hockey Analyst, Replacing Melrose
Former NHLer Matthew Barnaby "is expected shortly to be named" ESPN's hockey analyst, replacing Barry Melrose, according to Alan Pergament of the BUFFALO NEWS. Sources said that Barnaby and ESPN "are finalizing details on the deal to replace Melrose," who this summer became the Lightning's new coach. The hiring "could be announced within a few days." Barnaby, along with fellow former NHLer Rob Ray, had served as host of Time Warner Cable SportsNet's "The Enforcers" (BUFFALO NEWS, 9/19). ESPN said Barnaby has yet to sign a contract with the net, but they "hope to have Matthew join us this season" (THE DAILY).

MAPLE LEAVE: In Toronto, Mike Zeisberger reported CBC analyst Harry Neale "was not surprised" to hear that Jim Hughson is replacing Bob Cole as the play-by-play announcer for the net's 7:00pm ET "Hockey Night in Canada" game this season. Neale: "Pretty much the same thing happened to me. I received a call from [CBC Sports Exec Dir] Scott Moore, who told me my duties would be reduced." Neale added that Cole "has not personally told him of any impending changes." Neale: "But where there is smoke, there usually is fire. It might not be over, but you can hear the alarm ringing" (TORONTO SUN, 9/17).
