Names & Faces: Can Cassel Rival Brady's Performance Off The Field?

Some Feel Cassel Has Tools To
Become Highly Marketable Player
In Boston, Meredith Goldstein profiles Patriots QB Matt Cassel's prospects at becoming the next Tom Brady off the field. Former Harper's Bazaar Fashion Dir Mary Alice Stephenson said that Cassel "has the good looks an athlete needs to transcend the sports world and become a bona-fide heartthrob." Stephenson: "Basically, with a little bit of polish, he could get as much attention and as much love for his fashion sense as Brady if he has the right people around him." But The Bonham Group VP/Communications Don Hinchey said that "few players are so good-looking that they become pinups without having done much for their sport." Hinchey: "Usually performance and charisma are the predictors for marketing and celebrity status." Hinchey added that "assuming he can get a few more wins on his record, Cassel will have to start making himself more visible to get the full Brady effect, assuming he wants it" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/18).

FEELING GOOD: In this week’s SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, Terry Lefton reports Fox’ Michael Strahan and Phillies 2B Chase Utley last month at Philadelphia’s Franklin Field filmed an ad for Unilever’s Vaseline Men line of lotions. The ad is scheduled to launch on cable sports nets and “other male-oriented programming” in early October (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 9/15 issue).

Herbstreit's image will appear on Armour-Eckrich advertising and promotional materials, and Herbstreit will be the centerpiece of a national consumer sweepstakes (Armour-Eckrich).
