Infineon Raceway Facing Lawsuit Over Accessibility Issues

Paraplegic Fan Files Lawsuit Against
Infineon Raceway Over Accessibility Issues
California-based Designing Accessible Communities Exec Dir Richard Skaff, a paraplegic, September 8 in U.S. District Court in S.F. "filed a lawsuit against Infineon Raceway, alleging violations of several California and federal laws," according to Bob Pockrass of NASCAR SCENE. Skaff "alleges violations of the Americans with Disability Act because of alleged non-compliant seating, parking, infrastructure, ticketing procedures, restrooms and other issues." The allegations "arise from Skaff's experiences attending" the Toyota/SaveMart 350 in '07 and the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals in July. Among Skaff's allegations are that the raceway "did not provide the required number of accessible, semi-accessible and companion seating," and that handicapped seating "was in the most expensive areas." Other allegations include that disabled parking "is inadequate," that there was "no disabled parking in the ticketing area," and that restrooms "have not been upgraded to be in compliance." Infineon Raceway President & GM Steve Page said in a statement the track is "committed to providing our guests with disabilities an enjoyable experience while at our facility. We believe our facility complies with applicable laws, and we will vigorously defend against these meritless claims." Skaff is "asking for an unspecified amount of damages and for the court to order the race track to come into compliance." In addition to Infineon Raceway, parent company SMI and Motorsports Authentics also are listed among the defendants in the lawsuit (SCENEDAILY.com, 9/17).
