Bill Allowing AEG To Put Signs At Convention Center Rejected

California State Senate Rejects Bill That Would
Have Allowed Billboards At L.A. Convention Center
The California state Senate yesterday "shot down" a bill that "would have created an exemption to the state ban on new freeway billboards for certain projects," including signage for the L.A. Convention Center, according to Patrick McGreevy of the L.A. TIMES. The L.A. City Council last week voted to sell signage rights for the L.A. Convention Center to AEG, and the bill had "some provisions tailored for" the company. AEG VP/Communications Michael Roth said that billboards proposed in the agreement with the City Council "require state exemptions such as those in the failed bill if they are to be built close to freeways." The bill would have allowed "dozens of new electronic billboards along freeways in downtown [L.A.] and in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties." Critics said that the legislation "was an attempt to circumvent the Senate Transportation Committee, which has rejected previous requests for exemptions." The bill, proposed by California Assemblyman Bill Emmerson, also would have "provided an exemption allowing digital signs in Rancho Cucamonga, Riverside, Huntington Beach, and Lennox," an unincorporated area near L.A. Int'l Airport, but AEG "is not involved in any of those projects." Supporters of the bill "vowed to bring the measure back next year" (L.A. TIMES, 9/17).
