NBC Earns 10.8/16 Nielsen Rating
For Steelers-Browns "SNF" Game
NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” earned a 10.8/16 national Nielsen rating (17.8 million viewers) for Steelers-Browns, up 10.2% from a 9.8/16 for Chargers-Patriots last year (15.3 million viewers). Through two “SNF” telecasts, NBC is averaging an 11.0/18 (18.1 million viewers), up 1.9% from last year's 10.8/18 (16.8 million viewers) (THE DAILY). 

SHIFT WORK: The GLOBE & MAIL's William Houston reports the CBC's Jim Hughson will replace Bob Cole as the play-by-play announcer for the 7:00pm ET "Hockey Night in Canada" game this NHL season, while announcer Mark Lee's "workload will be increased." Cole "will yield to Hughson, who will become the lead ['HNIC'] announcer and, as such, will call the 2009 Stanley Cup final." Also, the "plan to hire a new announcer has been shelved because of Lee's development as a playcaller." Hughson "will travel east, usually to Toronto, to call the early game of the weekly NHL doubleheader along with analyst Craig Simpson." Lee's on-air partner will be Marc Crawford. HNIC Exec Producer Sherali Najak said that the "number of regional telecasts will be increased, bringing the total to three" (GLOBE & MAIL, 9/16).

ROUND THREE: In this week's SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, John Ourand reports HBO Sports "will launch the third edition of its '24/7' series in the run-up to the Joe Calzaghe-Roy Jones Jr. fight" at MSG on November 8. The three-part series debuts October 26 at 8:30pm ET, the second episode is scheduled for November 2, while the finale is planned for November 6 (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 9/15 issue).

NOTES: On Long Island, Neil Best reports YES Network's Michael Kay has re-signed for another three years as the net's play-by-play announcer for Yankees games. A source said that the deal "will take him through his 10th season with the network" (NEWSDAY, 9/16)....FSN Prime Ticket for the '08-09 NBA season will air 47 regular-season Clippers games. For the first time, all Clippers home telecasts on the net will be available on HD. Games on Prime Ticket will feature play-by-play announcer Ralph Lawler in his 30th year with the team. Lawler will be joined by analyst Michael Smith (FSN).
