Kornheiser Apologizes On-Air For Comments Made During "MNF"

Kornheiser Apologizes For Comments
Made About Spanish-Language Clip
With less than five minutes left in the fourth quarter of last night's Eagles-Cowboys "MNF" game, ESPN’s Tony Kornheiser attempted to apologize for comments he had made in the first quarter after Cowboys RB Felix Jones ran back a kick-off for a touchdown. Kornheiser said, "I said something before I shouldn’t have said. I apologize for it. Not my first mistake. Undoubtedly, it won’t be my last, but a 100% apology.” After Jones' touchdown, ESPN aired clips of the Spanish-language broadcast calling the run. Kornheiser said of the Spanish announcers’ call, "I took high school Spanish and that either means, ‘Nobody is going to touch him,’ or, ‘Could you pick up my dry cleaning in the morning?’ It’s one of those two" (“MNF,” ESPN, 9/15). Last night marked the start of the NFL's celebration to honor Hispanic Heritage Month (THE DAILY). AWFUL ANNOUNCING's Brian Powell writes, "The fact that the comment was potentially offensive never even crossed my mind. I also understand after the fact that it could be taken as such and that was probably not something you wanted to joke about during a Hispanic Heritage Month spot. In the end, I really think this was a case of Kornheiser being his unfunny on-air self and not saying anything inflammatory, so hopefully he'll get a pass on this one" (AWFULANNOUNCING.com, 9/16). THE BIG LEAD writes the comment "was harmless." Kornheiser is part of the announce team "for comedic/entertainment value anyway … so where’s the beef?" (THEBIGLEAD.com, 9/16). PRO FOOTBALL TALK's Mike Florio writes, "We're not sure whether the remark crossed the line. But it was too close to the line for Tony's own good" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 9/16).

TUESDAY MORNING QUARTERBACK: In Pennsylvania, Keith Groller writes Kornheiser "talked too much throughout the night, but he was spot-on accurate when he said, 'This game had everything.'" Kornheiser also "agitated" ESPN's Ron Jaworski by referring to Cowboys WR Terrell Owens "as still being the Eagles No. 1 receiver even though that was four seasons ago." Kornheiser seemed "overly enamored with the Cowboys with a special fixation" on Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones. But Groller writes Eagles-Cowboys "brought the MNF franchise back." Groller: "For the first time in a long time, people will spend Tuesday morning ... talking about a classic. And they might be grumbling about Kornheiser, just the way they used to gripe about [Howard] Cosell" (MCALL.com, 9/16).
