Blog Hound: Bloggers Discuss Armstrong's Return To Cycling

Bloggers discuss cyclist Lance Armstrong's return to the sport and its implications for the sport and Armstrong himself.

Sports Blog: for the common fan
Posted by: Avinsh Anand
"What if he fails miserably. … His position as one of the greatest sportspersons ever and probably the greatest cyclist of all times will be considerably damaged. … The drug–tainted nature of cycling will ensure that Armstrong’s legacy takes a serious beating.”

"Despite your personal opinion of Lance I think all of us hope he continues his fight against cancer, and even develops greater awareness of cancer, and further increases funding for cancer research. Go Lance Go.”
The Adventurist

“The Tour de France has suffered from waning interest, sponsorships are harder to come-by, and there has really not been a ‘face’ of cycling since Lance Armstrong made his retirement official. … That’s all about to change…”
Tour de Katie

"Lance Armstrong is claiming that he is doing this for cancer. Bull. This is a typical Lance Armstrong ego trip. Disgusting.”
Boulder Report

"It does little, in all honesty, to dispel the serious and reasonable doubts about his past. After all, if Armstrong is concerned about skepticism of those wins, testing fresh samples is not exactly the primary way to quell those doubts.”

SportsMedia Challenge's Buzz Manager analyzed online discussion surrounding seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong announcing his return to cycling. Visit www.SportsBusinessDaily.com for more info on this topic. See more info on this topic.

  • The Buzz ranked 8 out of 10, a topic of a high level of interest among sports bloggers.
  • Bloggers in the positive category felt that Armstrong has nothing to lose by returning. He will get good publicity for his cancer causes whether he wins or loses. They also thought that Armstrong's return would help the sport in general by bringing cycling back into the mainstream media.
  • Bloggers in the negative category were concerned that coming out of retirement could tarnish Armstrong's legacy. At his retirement he was at the pinnacle of the sport, so many feel he won't be able to achieve the same success and that will hurt his image.
  • Bloggers in the neutral category mentioned Armstrong's return, but were undecided or undeclared on whether it was good or bad for him or for the sport.
