Brand Says Real Problem Facing NCAA Is
Athletes' Commercialization, Commoditization |
NCAA President Myles Brand Thursday, in a forum at the Univ. of Missouri School of Journalism (UMSJ) titled, "Technology and New Media: Reshaping the Future of Sports, Journalism and Advocacy," said the "real problem" facing the NCAA is the "commoditization and the commercialization of the athletes," according to Luke Thompson of the Columbia MISSOURIAN. The forum, moderated by "SportsCenter" anchor John Anderson, was one of several held as part of UMSJ's Centennial celebration. During the discussion, Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics member Sonja Steptoe "quickly questioned Brand's recent comments on a Huffington Post blog suggesting that the legalization of the use of real names in college fantasy football and other sports is a problem overplayed by some organizations," referring to CBSSports.com's plan to host a college fantasy football game with real players' names. Brand said that he "agreed with Steptoe and the NCAA is watching the situation carefully," but Brand emphasized that the NCAA is "more concerned with other issues." Meanwhile, Brand during the forum "frequently cited [ESPN] as a leader in positive new technology," noting ESPN360 and the "new research tools used to verify information to help them achieve transparency and accountability." The panel also included ESPN.com's T.J. Quinn and Wright Thompson, UM AD Mike Alden, AT&T VP/Brand Sponsorships Jamie Butcher and MLBPA Special Assistant to Exec Dir Donald Fehr Phil Bradley (Columbia MISSOURIAN, 9/12).
