Sharapova To Be Face Of 
Cole Haan Sporting Collection
REUTERS' Michelle Nichols wrote Sony Ericsson WTA Tour player Maria Sharapova "has become the face of the new collection Cole Haan Sporting," which launches in spring '09. As part of the deal, Sharapova "in future seasons plans to be involved in designing the collection." Sharapova: "My designs will be next fall, so I'm very excited" (REUTERS.com, 9/8). The line, which will feature "shoes and accessories for both men and women, will continue to use Nike Air technology." Cole Haan, which is owned by Nike, added that it "will also add new sneaker technology, including Flywire" (MEDIAPOST.com, 9/10).

ETERNAL FLAME: MARKETING WEEK's Louise Jack reports LOCOG "is planning to open branded retail outlets where it will sell licensed products, as part of its strategy for the sale of merchandising rights to London 2012." LOCOG has not decided "whether the outlets will be standalone shops or possibly franchises in department stores" (MARKETINGWEEK.co.uk, 9/10)....McDonald's said that global sales at restaurants open for at least 13 months "rose a stronger-than expected 8.5[%] in August, helped by growth in Europe and an Olympics advertising blitz." RBC Dominion Securities analyst Larry Miller: "Clearly being an Olympic sponsor in China is a good thing. For McDonald's, it was sort of a home run" (REUTERS, 9/10).

TOUCHY SUBJECT: In Louisiana, Bob Tompkins reported former NFL QBs Craig Nall, Drew Bledsoe, Rick Mirer, Alex Van Pelt and Kelly Holcomb, "as well as some current NFL players, ... are suing a company called Pay by Touch." The company "allowed customers to buy products by putting their fingertips on a sensor and having the cost automatically deducted from their UBS checking accounts." Pay by Touch "shut down without notifying customers in March, and the players say UBS should be accountable for the money they lost investing in the company because it concealed the criminal past of" Pay by Touch Founder John Rogers (Alexandria TOWN TALK, 9/9).

MIAMI TWICE: Dolphin Stadium has agreed to a multi-year marketing partnership with Dos Lunas Tequila, which becomes the first official tequila of Dolphin Stadium. The stadium will feature two tequila stations named The Dos Lunas Margarita Gardens (Dolphins)....Heat G Dwyane Wade yesterday filmed a Converse commercial at his high school alma mater -- Richards High School in Oak Lawn, Illinois (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 9/10).
