Participating In Photo Shoot Last Week In N.Y.
The GLOBE & MAIL's William Houston reports the NHL and NHLPA last week "organized a commercial and photo shoot in [N.Y.] for TV rights holders" featuring several top players. The event also was attended by a "small number of print reporters," including USA Today's Kevin Allen and ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun and Scott Burnside, but "that was about it." LeBrun said that he was "asked to attend by ESPN." NHL VP/PR Jamey Horan acknowledged that "only a small number of writers participated," and said that some, including Allen, "attended a similar but smaller function a year ago." Horan: "Moving forward, we'll look to possibly expand the entire initiative to include more players and media outlets now that the first experiment has been completed and well received." Houston: "That would be a good idea, because limiting invitations to a select number of writers did look as though the league was playing favourites" (GLOBE & MAIL, 9/10).

LET SERVE: In Virginia, Mark Berman notes WDBJ-CBS in Roanoke apologized yesterday for moving the U.S. Open men's final Monday to sister channel WDBJ-MYT. WDBJ GM Jeffrey Marks said, "We found ourselves between a real rock and a hard place. We rarely, rarely pre-empt local news at 5 and 6 o'clock on weekdays. Despite the fact that there is a rabid tennis audience ... it's a very small audience relative to ... the audience that watches news and the other programming we have" (ROANOKE TIMES, 9/10).

ON THE SCHEDULE: The Flames will have a "record 83 games ... televised this year, including three pre-season contests." The club will air 10 of those games on PPV (CALGARY SUN, 9/10)....The Hornets will see 78 games televised this season "either on Cox Sports Television [CST] or on national broadcasts" for ESPN/ABC and TNT. CST yesterday said that it will televise 65 Hornets regular-season games (NOLA.com, 9/9)....The Grizzlies yesterday announced that 40 of the team's 41 road games will be broadcast, and in total, a "combined 70 games will be broadcast on FSN South and SportSouth" (Memphis COMMERCIAL APPEAL, 9/10).

THE EMMY GOES TO: FSN West and FSN Prime Ticket Saturday received three L.A. Area Emmy Awards at the 60th annual presentation at the Leonard H. Goldenson Theatre. The RSNs received awards in the Sports Series, Sports Tease and Short Promo categories (FSN).
