ESPN's "MNF" Sets '08 Cable Audience High With Vikings-Packers

ESPN's Vikings-Packers "MNF" Game Draws
Largest Cable Audience Of Any Program In '08
ESPN's "MNF" coverage of Vikings-Packers, the first game of a doubleheader, drew a 9.3 cable rating and averaged 12.5 million viewers, up 8.1% and 12.8%, respectively, over an 8.6 cable rating and 11.1 million average viewers for last year's Ravens-Bengals opener. The game marks the largest audience for any cable program in '08 to date. ESPN's coverage of the Broncos-Raiders "MNF" nightcap earned a 7.3 cable rating and averaged 9.7 million viewers, up 5.8% and 13.7%, respectively, over a 6.9 and 8.5 million average viewers for last year's comparative Cardinals-49ers game. Broncos-Raiders currently stands as the second-largest cable TV audience this year. Meanwhile, NFL content on ESPN.com generated more than 13.3 million visits and 94.2 million page views from Monday through Tuesday at noon ET, and NFL-related video on ESPN.com received 4 million views in that time (THE DAILY). In Milwaukee, Bob Wolfley reports Vikings-Packers averaged a 45.5/62 in the Milwaukee market, up from the Packers' average local rating last season of 41.0. WISN-ABC earned a 32.1/44 for the game, and ESPN drew a 13.4/18 for its coverage of the game in the market  (MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 9/10).

PEACOCK POWER: DAILY VARIETY's Rick Kissell reports NBC, helped by its two NFL games, led all networks for the week ending September 7, marking the fifth consecutive week it has led ratings. NBC's Bears-Colts "Sunday Night Football" game earned a 7.4/19 rating in adults 18-49, and the net's Thursday night coverage of Redskins-Giants earned a 5.4/17 in the demo. NBC overall averaged a 3.1/9 in the 18-49 demo, topping Fox' 2.7/8 to lead the week (DAILY VARIETY, 9/10).

LOCAL RATINGS: In St. Louis, Bill Coats reported KTVI-Fox Sunday for Rams-Eagles earned a 12.0 rating, marking the "lowest rating Sunday for a telecast of [a Rams] season opener since they arrived in St. Louis" in '95. The 12.0 was down 30.2% from the "previous low figure of 17.2 set in 1995 for the team's first game after moving" to the city (ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH, 9/9).
