NFL, NFLPA, Reebok Work To Iron Out Ocho Cinco Jersey Agreement

NFL, Reebok Working On Resolving
Issue Of Unsold Johnson Jerseys
The NFL and the NFLPA reportedly "are attempting to resolve the dispute regarding unsold Bengals jerseys bearing the name 'C. Johnson,'" though it is "unclear when or if a resolution will be reached," according to Mike Florio of PRO FOOTBALL TALK. Though reports have stated that Reebok "wants upwards of $4[M] before" it will allow Bengals WR Chad Ocho Cinco to wear a jersey with his new legal surname, sources said that the figure "is less than $800,000" (PROFOOTBALLTALK.com, 9/9). Reebok and the NFL said that a resolution "hopefully will be reached soon, though neither said whether it would happen before" Sunday's Titans-Bengals game. Reebok said that the company "simply is following the league's leadership on the current 'Ocho Cinco' ban." In Cincinnati, Dustin Dow notes before Ocho Cinco can wear a jersey with his new surname, "he first must buy every 'C. Johnson' jersey for sale nationwide." Reebok declined comment on how much "C. Johnson" inventory is "sitting unsold in stores." But Dow notes the company "has an interest in selling 'Ocho Cinco' jerseys." The "C. Johnson" jersey was the 14th-most-sold NFL jersey last season, and the name change "could drive popularity back into the top 10." Marquette Univ. Law School National Sports Law Institute Dir Matt Mitten: "Reebok certainly has an economic incentive to let him change the name. But what's happening here is that the league is strictly relying upon its licensing agreement." Cincinnati-based Koch Sporting Goods Owner Chris Koch said that the "expected sales increases for 'Ocho Cinco' jerseys would probably offset any profits lost from a decline in value of the 'C. Johnson' jerseys"  (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 9/10).
