Philly MLS Not Concerned With Inexperience Of Stadium Builder

Philly MLS Taps T.N. Ward To
Build $115M Stadium In Chester
Pennsylvania-based construction company T.N. Ward, which last week was chosen to build a new $115M multi-use stadium and entertainment complex in Chester, Pennsylvania, for Keystone Sports & Entertainment, owners of the MLS Philadelphia franchise, has "never built a soccer stadium," according to Jeff Gammage of the PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER. T.N. Ward Chair & CEO David Panichi: "We understand what it takes to build a project of this complexity. We've built many facilities that are different -- with success." MLS Philadelphia CEO Nick Sakiewicz said that he "wasn't concerned that T.N. Ward has never erected a soccer stadium," because the facility is "relatively simple, without the retractable roofs or half-billion-dollar price tags of some modern sports stadiums." Groundbreaking on the 18,634-seat stadium that can expand to 21,600 is scheduled for this fall. T.N. Ward, which "basically will build the stadium as designed by Rossetti Architects and ICON Venue Group," was chosen from an initial pack of 20 prospective firms. Sakiewicz said that the group was the "most experienced of the bidders in handling the soil and water conditions on the riverside," having built Harrah's Waterfront Tower casino in Atlantic City. T.N. Ward's "area roots allowed the team to emphasize its commitment to hiring local people and companies." Sakiewicz said that the firm "made the lowest bid," though he declined to name the figure (PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER, 9/8).
