N.Y. Times Plans To Merge Sports, Metro Into Other Sections

N.Y. Times execs Friday said that as of October 6, the newspaper will "reduce the number of sections printed in the New York metropolitan area, in a move to save money on production," according to Richard Perez-Pena of the N.Y. TIMES. The Metro section will become part of the paper's A section, "which also contains the International and National reports, and the editorial and Op-Ed pages, on Mondays through Saturdays, and possibly on Sundays." The Sports coverage will "go into the section that begins with Business Day, on Tuesdays through Fridays, while Sports will remain a separate section on weekends and on Mondays." The execs said that combining sections "will not reduce the number of pages devoted to the Metro and Sports reports," though it "will take away some of the prominence of a stand-alone section" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/6). N.Y. Times Co. Chair Arthur Sulzberger Jr. said that there will "be some advantages" to merging the sections, including a "freestanding arts section in the Saturday paper and later deadlines for the Monday business section." But one N.Y. Times staffer said that the news was "'pretty demoralizing' for the metro and sports reporters, who will have fewer stories featured on section fronts" (WALL STREET JOURNAL, 9/6). No job cuts are expected as part of the changes (AP, 9/5).
