Falcons' Blank Tries To Recreate Business Success In Football

| N.Y. Times Profiles Falcons' Arthur Blank |
The sports business in the U.S. is "dominated by self-made men looking for mountains to conquer," yet watching Falcons Owner and The Home Depot co-Founder ARTHUR BLANK's team struggle last season, one "wondered how it could be that someone so good at one business seemed so inept at another," according to the N.Y. TIMES' Joe Nocera, who profiled Blank under the header, "Leaving Boardroom For Skybox." Blank: "Before I bought the team, [Patriots Owner] ROBERT KRAFT told me that I was going to be surprised to discover that football is much more similar to business than not. And I found that that was mostly true. I have the same sort of relationship with our associates as I did at Home Depot. And you have to listen to your customers -- which in this case are the fans." Blank added, "What football executives know, I'll never know. The best I can do on the football side is make sure we have the best people and get out of their way." Blank said of suspended QB MICHAEL VICK's arrest and conviction on dogfighting charges, "We need to understand who the players are running with, and what is going on in their personal lives." At The Home Depot, Blank "always put character and integrity at the top of the list of traits they looked for in their executives," and "that's what [Blank] believes he has in his new team." Nocera: "Seven years in, Arthur Blank is still trying to conquer the mountain. ... The next few seasons are when we'll learn whether [Blank] has the ability to run a successful football team" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/6).
