MLB Actively Involved In "Stand Up To Cancer" Telethon

MLB will join numerous entertainers and musicians to take part in "Stand Up To Cancer," an hour-long telethon hosted simultaneously by ABC, CBS and NBC at Hollywood's Kodak Theater at 8:00pm ET Friday night, according to Barry Bloom of MLB.com. MLB joined the initiative in May and "has already provided an initial contribution of $10[M]." PSAs have been running on the video boards at MLB's 30 ballparks throughout the summer, and "fans attending games have been asked to 'Stand Up To Cancer' by texting a $5 donation from their cell phones." MLB Commissioner Bud Selig will be among the celebrities appearing on the telethon. Selig, a skin cancer survivor, said, "I know there are other initiatives, but there's something so unique about this one. In talking to doctors about this, they feel this money for research will really lead to a breakthrough in finding a cure. So I would tell you that I feel this is a privilege. I don't regard it as a responsibility" (MLB.com, 9/4). U.S. Cellular Field will be the “setting for the opening sequence of the live telecast" tonight (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 9/5).

WNBA RAISING BREAST CANCER AWARENESS: The WNBA will host several activities to generate awareness about breast cancer from September 7-13. The Silver Stars-Sun game on ABC Sunday and the Mercury-Shock game on ESPN2 Tuesday will include special programming on the league’s breast health initiative and awareness efforts The Sun and Shock will wear white uniforms with pink trim during the games, which will then be auctioned off for charity. Coaches will wear pink ties or scarves and referees will use pink whistles (WNBA).
