NFL Players To Visit Schools To Tout Exercise
As Part Of Deal With National Dairy Council |
The NFL and the National Dairy Council (NDC) have announced a five-year initiative to combat childhood obesity by educating kids about exercise and proper nutrition. The NDC will spend $100M in financial support over the length of the program, including school grants. The council will also spend an extra $150M during that time on other efforts aimed at improving child health and wellness (NDC). NFL Marketing Dir Peter O'Reilly: "The vast majority (of the money) is really tied to running these programs in schools and also tied to the [NDC] providing grants to schools that adopt these programs." USA TODAY's Laura Petrecca reports the NDC will run and deploy the program, while the NFL will "pocket a sponsorship fee." As part of the agreement, NFL players "will make school visits to tout exercise." The program will be launched in "about 50 schools in seven test markets" this school year, and NDC Exec VP Jean Ragalie said that it will "expand to about 40,000 schools in the next few years." The NDC has worked with individual NFL teams for five years, but Ragalie said that the new plan is "broader and more 'comprehensive'" (USA TODAY, 9/5).
