Jets Oppose Fan's Plan To Sell Naming Rights For His Seats

Jets Oppose Fan's Efforts To Sell
Naming Rights To His Stadium Seats
Jets season-ticket holder Howard Freeman is "offering to sell the naming rights to his two seats for Jet games at the new Meadowlands stadium to help him offset the $30,000 (PSL) that the team is charging," but the Jets said that Freeman's plan "was out of bounds," according to Bob Groves of the Bergen RECORD. Jets Senior Dir of Media Relations Bruce Speight: "It is not permitted." Freeman said that obtaining the naming rights to his two lower-level loge seats in the Jets' new stadium, which the team will share with the Giants, "would entitle the buyer to cover them with its corporate or personal logo during 10 Jet home games." Freeman said that he and his son, Jesse, "would wear merchandise bearing the sponsor's logo at all games." Freeman also is "offering free sampling of all his pregame tailgate offerings and the right of first refusal to buy any of his unused Jets tickets at face value." Freeman: "I'm just looking to market my little part of the investment. I should get more than a cup holder and more leg room" (Bergen RECORD, 8/29). SportsCorp President Marc Ganis said of the plan, "[The Jets] could block a seat cover, but if he wore a jacket that says Joe's Mortuary on the back of it, and drapes it over his seat, they couldn't block that." Freeman noted that signage at his tailgate party "might be free of restrictions." A Jets spokesperson said that the team "would not allow seat covers" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/29).
