Goodell Says NFL Could See More Regular-Season Games By 2010

Goodell Says League May
Add Regular Season Games
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Thursday in a radio interview on the "Dan Patrick Show" said that the league "may reduce the preseason by as many as two games and increase the regular season from 16 to 18 games," according to Randy Covitz of the K.C. STAR. Goodell said that a change "could come by 2010 at the earliest, subject to collective bargaining with the [NFLPA] and adjustments to contracts" with the league's TV partners. Any adjustment to the schedule before 2013 "would need to take into account a system for paying the NFL for the extra regular-season games." Chiefs Chair Clark Hunt said of the regular-season expansion, "It might make sense to go to 17 [regular season games] and three [preseason games] and see how that works." With NFL owners indicating that they want a new CBA by the spring of 2010, Hunt said, "The timing might work out very well. There is going to be lots of dialogue on a whole lot of issues, and this will be one." Chiefs QB Damon Huard: "I think it's the right thing to do. The fans certainly love regular-season action." Chiefs CB Patrick Surtain: "It's kind of hard to get into preseason games because you know you're coming out of the game" (K.C. STAR, 8/29).

FUMBLED SNAP: ESPN.com's Dave Fleming wrote this was "not the NFL's greatest preseason," but "one of the most disturbing headlines of the preseason actually went unnoticed: when Roger Goodell said he's considering expanding the season." Fleming: "I want to beg him to reconsider this idea. ... The season hasn't even started and already because of the economics of the game the product is being watered down by injuries to stars. ... And we haven't even played a game yet. Imagine the human carnage after 22 games" (ESPN.com, 8/27).
