NFL Maintains A "B+" Standard In Annual Diversity Report

Univ. of Central Florida (UCF) Institute for Diversity & Ethics in Sport Dir Richard Lapchick in his '08 NFL Racial & Gender Report Card awarded the league a "B+" for racial hiring practices. The NFL's point total of 87.1 was down slightly from 88.6 for last season. The NFL did not receive a gender grade because it did not provide the necessary data. The study was conducted on data used from the '07 NFL season, when Giants GM Jerry Reese became the first African-American to win a Super Bowl. There are six African-American head coaches this season, level with '07 but down from seven in '06, and five African-American GMs, even with '07 and up from four in '06. The NFL this season has a record number of African-American assistant coaches. While the percentage of white NFLers last season remained steady at 31%, the number of African-American players dropped from 67% to 66%. Meanwhile, despite the NFL not receiving a grade for gender, the report noted the record of NFL teams regarding the hiring of women remained poor, as Raiders President Amy Trask is the only female President or CEO of a team (UCF). The NFL also did not submit data for the diversity part of the report card, and NFL Senior VP/PR Greg Aiello said the league prefers to "focus on our own initiatives to enhance diversity and inclusiveness in our workplace" (USA TODAY, 8/28).
